The Craftsmanship of an Antique Terracotta Bust

The high-quality sculpture depicts the young prince with his characteristic medium-length hairstyle and a broadly draped cloak. This cloak is elegantly knotted around the shoulders and rests on a classic round pedestal. Specialized French workshops crafted this type of terracotta bust of Louis XVII in an artisanal manner during the nineteenth century. The back and edges subtly reveal the natural, reddish terracotta. This is due to a dark patina layer covering the material. This specific interplay of color and material is characteristic of the French School. Moreover, it remains highly popular among collectors of antique sculptures to this day. Every antique terracotta statue from this period exudes an atmosphere of pure French history and authentic craftsmanship.

Historic Character in Original State (“As Is”)

This specific specimen of the **terracotta bust of Louis XVII** is in a fair, unrestored condition. You can see natural signs of age on the patina of the nose and shoulders, among other areas. At the bottom of the authentic terracotta base, there is a characteristic, historic flaw in the form of a chip and slight wear. The sculpture deliberately has no subsequent repairs or major restorations. As a result, the historical integrity and the antique appearance of the artwork are fully preserved. For the connoisseur and antique enthusiast, precisely this lived-in condition (“as is”) constitutes the ultimate proof of authenticity. It showcases an authentic **terracotta bust of Louis XVII** with a tangible history.

The History Behind the Model of Jean-Antoine Houdon
