The historical origin of the church window

The history behind this object reads like a chronicle of resilience. During the liberation of Breda in October 1944, the church tower was blown up by retreating troops. The original stained-glass windows from 1925 were completely destroyed in the process. Fortunately, restoration work began again around 1947.
The then parish priest sought out young and local talent with a specific goal in mind. He wanted to inject a fresh spirit into the interior. To this end, he chose the young artist from Bredame Akke Sins (1928–2025). The priest was immediately deeply impressed by her daring designs. Therefore, he immediately awarded her the monumental commission for the side aisles.

A unique anecdote from the Bredase art archives

This led to a unique anecdote in the history books. Sins had already officially secured this prestigious church commission before her admission to the art academy. The pastor unconditionally believed in her vision. In short, he personally traveled with her by train to her admission interviews at that time.

Craftsmanship of the Bredase School

In addition, Akke Sins came to the Academie St. Joost under the tutelage of a true master. This was Gerrit de Morée (1910–1981), the head teacher of monumental art. A young student could not possibly complete such an assignment alone. Therefore, it was antique stained-glass window Technically developed in the professional workshop of De Morée.
As a result, you see the perfect synergy of this master-student duo reflected in the glass. At the center of the composition is the beautifully stylized white lily. This is the Christian symbol for the virginal purity of Mary. The flower is framed by a heavy, expressive border. This style is very typical of Gerrit de Morée’s work. The central motif is surrounded by geometric planes in soft blue, green, and gray tones.
