Beautiful etching of the port of Antwerp.

Signed: Egide Linnig 1853

Egide Linnig (Antwerp August 25, 1821 – Sint-Willibrords October 13, 1860):
Romantic-realistic painter and etcher, primarily of river landscapes and seascapes. Brother of Willem L. Sr. and Jan Theodor Joseph L. Studied at the Antwerp Academy (1834–42, Mathieu Van Brée, Jacques Van Gingelen), where he later became a teacher and mentored, among others, Florent Crabeels. Visited the Netherlands (1844) and Norway (1847). Studied his contemporaries and, at the Hague Museum, the old masters. From 1848 onwards, worked regularly on the coast and in the Netherlands. Also a prolific etcher and considered one of the first realistic engravers in our country. His etchings, although very refined technically, retain the character of a free, rapid execution. Some titles: Fishing boat at Blankenberge, Shipwreck at night, Ostend fisherwoman, At Wenduine, Doel, Zierikzee, Overwintering in Novaya Zemlya, Departure of the ‘Macassar’, the ‘Walvisch’ of Ostend, the ‘British Queen’, the ‘Emmanuel’, the ‘Ville de Bruges’. Work in the Museums of Antwerp (KMSK and Maritime Museum), Brussels, Kortrijk, Sint-Niklaas, Bremen, and Gotha.
