Description
Style and Impasto Technique
This painting is a true masterpiece by Peter Brouwer, who was known for his expressive impasto technique. Using a palette knife, the artist applied thick, impasto layers of oil paint. This gives the wild, atmospheric clouds and the glistening waves a tactile texture and a beautiful sense of depth. The contrast between the rugged, dark ship hulls and the golden-yellow center immediately draws the viewer into the painting.
About the Artist
Peter Brouwer (Utrecht, 1935 – IJsselstein, 2010) was a painter known for his direct observations and use of light. He studied at the Evening Academy and was deeply inspired throughout his career by his many travels throughout Europe. His works are appreciated worldwide for their romantic atmosphere and masterful use of color.
Condition and Character
This oil painting is in a well-worn but sound antique condition. Due to the heavy, impasto technique, a few minuscule pieces of paint have flaked off over the years. This is entirely normal for this style of painting and is in no way distracting to the eye when the work is hanging on the wall. The heavy wooden frame shows some characteristic signs of aging, with minor damage to the wood, and a small piece of the plaster ornament is missing. This contributes to the authentic patina look that looks so beautiful in both classic and modern interiors. All specific signs of age have been carefully photographed to provide a transparent and honest representation.
