Large Japanese ‘Kibori Kuma’ Wooden Bear – Authentic Hokkaido Folk Art
Discover this characterful Japanese wooden bear (‘Kibori Kuma’), a handmade vintage object from Hokkaido. With a length of 31 cm, this sculpture is an atmospheric centerpiece in any interior. The object is made of native Japanese hardwood according to the Chigiri-bori technique with expressive gouge strokes for the fur.
The History of Hokkaido Folk Art
The tradition is intertwined with the indigenous Ainu culture, where the bear was revered as the god of the mountains. In the early 1920s, landowner Tokugawa Yoshichika introduced it as winter employment, which evolved into iconic Hokkaido folk art (Mingei). The bear symbolizes natural power and courage.
Why This Bear Statue Fits in a Modern Interior
This authentic object seamlessly aligns with the Japandi interior style and the Wabi-Sabi philosophy through its visible handmade imperfections and natural materials. Over the years, the wood has developed a warm patina and is in excellent condition.
