Description
Antique Chinese Imari Bowl – History and Splendor of Colors
Discover this monumental antique Chinese Imari bowl from the late nineteenth century. Although the color palette immediately recalls traditional Japanese Arita porcelain, this imposing cabinet bowl was nonetheless crafted in the renowned Chinese kilns of Jingdezhen. Around 1880, European demand for the characteristic Imari palette was so great that Chinese master painters began perfectly copying this style for the international export market. Thanks to its generous diameter of 26 cm and a height of 11.5 cm, this handmade art object forms an atmospheric, historical centerpiece in any modern interior.
The craftsmanship of this antique Chinese Imari bowl
The painting on this Chinese Imari porcelain bowl demonstrates an exceptionally high level of craftsmanship. For example, the central interior decoration shows a layered depiction of an ornate flower vase (hanagoike) filled with peonies and chrysanthemums. Moreover, this floral motif is mirrored on the exterior in large, undulating panels.
Between these main panels lies a deep cobalt blue underglaze. This blue is rhythmically interrupted by round cartouches featuring extremely detailed landscapes. On one side you see a bird of paradise in a golden hilly landscape, while on the other you find a traditional decor of bamboo stalks (take) and white plum blossoms (ume). In Eastern philosophy, these symbols represent steadfastness, resilience, and happiness. In addition, the entire design is richly highlighted with hand-applied gold glaze and deep iron red.
The Authentic Qianlong Mark and the Sound
On the underside is a four-character mark in underglaze cobalt blue: 「乾隆年製」 (Qianlong Nian Zhi). This is a so-called apocryphal mark referring to the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736–1795). This mark was applied at the time by 19th-century potters as a quality stamp and tribute to the past.
Thanks to the extremely high firing temperature, the porcelain clay has completely vitrified. This is reflected not only in the substantial weight of 1.6 kg, but also in the exceptional condition of the object. The bowl is completely intact. As a result, when lightly touched, the dish produces a pristine, crystal-clear tone. This is the ultimate proof that the porcelain is free of internal hairlines or hidden restorations. Finally, a small iron-red glaze splatter on the base is a reminder of the traditional firing process in the old wood-burning kilns.
Maximalist or Eclectic Styling with Asian Art
This piece lends itself perfectly to a luxurious, eclectic interior or as a powerful styling accent in a modern Japandi setting. This antique Chinese Imari bowl functions beautifully as a standalone eye-catcher on an antique cabinet, sideboard, or dining table. In addition, the bowl can function exceptionally well as an exclusive punch bowl or presentation dish. With this Chinese vase-style bowl bearing a Qianlong mark, you are therefore bringing a magnificent piece of tangible trade history into your home.
