Rotterdam from the Ferry — 1833
Thomas Shotter Boys (1803–1874)
after a drawing by Clarkson Stanfield (1793–1867)
Original tone lithograph
Description
Very fine 19th-century tinted lithograph from 1833, produced by the British master lithographer Thomas Shotter Boys, after a sketch by the famous marine painter Clarkson Stanfield. The work shows a vivid and authentic image of Rotterdam seen from the ferry, with a ship in the foreground, shipyard workers, wooden barrels, and the characteristic windmills on the horizon.
The lithograph is part of the prestigious series Stanfield Sketches, a series of topographical and marine views published in a small edition. The subtle tonal transitions, sketchy lines, and atmospheric depth are characteristic of Boys’ mastery of the early lithographic technique.
A particularly collectible work for enthusiasts of maritime art, Rotterdam history, and early 19th-century prints.
