Artistic context of the image
This refined bust embodies the revival of French classical sculpture. The piece dates from the late 19th century. This was the period of the Belle Époque and the early Art Nouveau. During this period, French artists often drew inspiration from Romantic ideals. The tilted head and parted lips are good examples of this. Furthermore, this young woman’s introspective gaze lends the work a poetic style. In short, the sculpture radiates pure, youthful beauty.
Bronze Casting Artistry and Artisanal Details
The casting of this bust is of a remarkably high standard. The details are therefore extremely sharply visible. Note, for example, the fluid structure of the luxuriant hair. This falls gracefully down her neck. The artist also applied a fine texture to the drapery of the clothing. This contrasts beautifully with the smooth finish of the skin. The object also has a layered brown patina. This original patina subtly accentuates the depth in the face.
Display and marble pedestal
The bust rests on an elegantly contoured bronze piédouche pedestal. This pedestal is mounted on a square base of black-and-white veined marble. The contrast between the warm bronze and the cool marble gives the sculpture a monumental appearance. Nevertheless, the sculpture has a compact size of 26.5 cm. This makes it ideal as an exclusive piece for an antique desk. However, this charming sculpture also fits perfectly on a marble mantelpiece or in a display cabinet.
Origin and current condition
This bust is in a beautiful and original antique condition. The bronze is completely intact. There are therefore no dents or cracks. However, the heavy marble base has a few tiny chips along the corners. These superficial signs of age are to be expected given the natural stone’s great age. They do not detract from the overall appearance in the slightest. We have carefully photographed all signs of aging to provide an accurate representation.
