Description

*** SOLD ***

We are proud to present this monumental Japanese Imari porcelain decorative dish. This large presentation plate has a diameter of no less than 31.5 cm and was crafted in the second half of the 19th century in the legendary Arita kilns. It is a fantastic example of the refined Japanese export art that enchanted the European nobility at the time.

Traditional Kinrande Palette & Symbolism

The plate is masterfully decorated in the recognizable Kinrandestyle. The palette consists of deep underglaze cobalt blue, rich iron red, overglaze green and yellow enamels, finished with refined gold accents. The interior depicts a vibrant, asymmetrical Kachō-ga decor with flying birds between blooming branches, flanked by ceremonial Kai-awase (shell) boxes. The edge is beautifully constructed from diamond patterns and features the imperial Paulownia mon (Paulownia crest).

Authentic Oven Marks and Details

The reverse also testifies to pure craftsmanship: it features hand-painted cobalt blue symbols of good fortune in the form of clouds and butterflies. The shallow, unglazed foot ring displays the characteristic orange-brown ‘iron skin’—authentic kiln marks created by historic wood firing in the Arita kilns.
